The decision on the BSkyB deal has been delayed, which is more like it, but obviously a delay isn't a stop, and I really must ask the general public not to let their revulsion lapse like some magazine subscription bought for them as a well-meaning gift. Right now Murdoch, and indeed the government, would like another bite at this cherry as soon as possible, and it's up to the rest of us to keep up the background noise and ensure that it still tastes just as disgusting.

For now, though, let's enjoy the intriguing spectacle of the Prime Minister working hard to dismiss any notion that he might be somehow tainted by his former head of communications being arrested for the very offence for which he was known when the Prime Minister appointed him, and over which he had had to resign from his previous job.

I think Dave should be more worried about having made an enemy of Brooks with his statement that, had he been her boss, he would have accepted her resignation. The knife in the back is still vibrating!

She knows where the bodies are buried, and I wonder whether she's got anything on him.

If Brooks goes down, and seeing as Coulson's just been arrested I don't see how she can't, she just might take a whole host of others with her. I'm beginning to think that Cameron might not get out of this intact. The Telegraph was sticking the knife in yesterday, but I can't see the Tory Party ditching him just yet - after all, who would they replace him with with? Boris? Can't see it myself. Mind, I'm not up on the inner workings of the Tory Party, can anyone shed light on this?
Tell you what, I wouldn't want to be Rebecca Brooks right now. Especially in light of the revelations around the Daniel Morgan inquiry. Sooner or later the Met will start talking about the 2002 meeting they had with her, and when that happens believe me Satan himself couldn't save her.

Jail time do you think? I really couldn't care less if she quits her job or not, she must have millions in the bank already. I want to see her do jail time if she turns out to be as guilty as she looks.

I can't see it either, although there are plenty in the party who'd love to get rid of Cameron. If he did go now, Boris Johnson isn't an option as he's not in Parliament. Front runners would probably be George Osborne and Liam Fox. In a crisis situation, William Hague might be persuaded to stand. Ken Clarke's too old now, but other possible contenders might be Jeremy Hunt, Michael Gove, Theresa May, maybe Andrew Lansley, maybe even Eric Pickles. David Davis might fancy another go too. Stranger things have happened - look at Ed Miliband...

Are you enjoying all this? It feels like a sort of Christmas for, er, us, whatever we are. And today is Boxing Day. And then tomorrow, we still have the gifts and some leftover food, but it's not Christmas any more. What I mean is, I'm not looking forward to January and going back to work.

I spoke about this with my Aussie girlfriend today. She's in Berlin, I'm in Edinburgh. She'd never heard of News Of The World [yup. There are very good reasons I'm in love with her].


Cameron doesn't really suffer bad judgement. He's one of a breed of gentleman to whom such things are just part of the business. Proper old Tory. Born to the job, and gets it done no matter who has to be murdered in the process.. metaphorically, of course.
And works with people who get the job done, No matter how. Because that's what born leaders do.

Likewise, by his own standing he isn't at all out of touch. He's in touch with exactly the people he needs to get the job done.
it so happens that those same people are the ones we - the Common People - find incomprehensively disgusting. And that's why they are in power and we aren't. Because there are things some people will do for competitive advantage that you or I wouldn't even imagine possible.

Politics, right now, is unimaginably filthy. But it probably always has been. Because people like Cameron are in bed with the sort of Editor who will do absolutely anything to sell papers, and carry word of how glorious our Leaders are. It worked equally as well for Blair, who was slightly more sensible and somewhat less slimily evil. It didn't work at all for Brown because he simply did not understand why that sort of thing mattered.
