“I don’t know your GP practice,” said my authoritative consultant, looking at my notes, “but this Dr Cresswell—he’s a good man, isn’t he?”

“Um, no,” I was forced to reply. “She’s a lady.”

There wasn’t a flicker of a reaction. “Yes,” he agreed smoothly.

He asked me what I did. “I work at Hansard,” I said.

“Ah yes. That’s that large manufacturing company, isn’t it?” he said cheerfully.

“No—” I began.

“No, of course,” he agreed instantly, without blinking, “it’s a scoping company.”

Realising that this was in danger of becoming some sort of sketch, I told him what I actually do for a living. “Yes, that’s right,” he agreed.

I know all consultants’ motto is “Never Wrong”, but this was still pretty special. Do they teach this technique at consultants’ evening classes?

It sounds like he was trying to use the fishing techniques that psychics use on audience members, but he had got it the wrong way round.
