I had a 'salad' the other day which consisted of a hollowed out block of tofu with a few beansprouts shoved inside.

The tangy zip of Miracle Whip

I hate to be the American who comes in with a correction, but I feel it's only right to put this straight. Miracle Whip and Hellmanns Light are not, in fact, the same thing. Miracle Whip contains a magic ingredient to make it taste tangy - almost like dairy that's gone bad - but which makes it a fascinating counterpart to meats and vegetables such as the cucumbers described above. According to the advertising from my childhood, "a salad just isn't a salad without the tangy zip of miracle whip salad dressing." Hope that clarifies.

We have that salad in Poland. It's called Miseria (really!)

Fantastic! Does that recipe, too, begin and end with salt?

It's like mayonnaise but it's got a zingy flavor. It's my favorite thing for sandwiches but unfortunately this heathen country eschews all things good, like Miracle Whip and Taco Bell and decent cinnamon rolls and waffle irons.
