In the middle of quite a good contribution to the debate on Lords reform, Lord Lipsey [Labour] chooses inexplicably to focus our minds on the amount of money involved (£2 billion over 15 years for a fully elected House, based on conservative estimates) thus:
Lord Lipsey: Two billion pounds, my Lords, represents a pile of £10 notes a mile and a half high.
The Routemaster has indeed become the standard unit of measurement, and the noble Lord needs to update his striking image accordingly. Obviously what he should have said was, “a pile of £10 notes the height of 264 double-decker buses nose-to-tail, or 554 double-decker buses if they were stood one on top of the other, although the bus at the top would need to be about 80 per cent of a bus, so maybe that one could be open-roof, my Lords”.
