ID cards were just batted back to the Commons. This means there's now a strong chance tomorrow will turn into another all-nighter as the Government tries yet again to ram its seedy little plans through Parliament uncontested the Commons tries to assert its will and the Lords stick to their guns.

It's this sort of approach that has led to the lack of respect so prevalent these days. Taxes may be on the rise, but it seems that decent British citizens will still be the victims as long as the New Labour mafia have the electorate by the throat!

On the other hand, it does provide another opportunity for a smart backbencher and/or Tory to make an arse of Charles Clarke and Andy Burnham, so all is not lost.

(My hatred for Andy Burnham is reaching the borderline-autistic stage.)

I think they should permit proxy sitters for all-night sessions. Some of those Lords are pretty old. The proxy people would go up to their appointed Lord, the Lord would whisper his or her general view in their ear. And then the proxy would go into the chamber and pretend to be the Lord.
