What to enjoy more—Baroness Trumpington appearing to take against Lord King's reference to her age or her subsequent claim to have no memory of the incident? “I didn’t mean to make the gesture. My hand must have flown up... I don’t remember doing it,” she said, convincingly.^[1]

I look forward to baroque conspiracy theories crystallising around this exchange, since while the V for victory gesture was of course popularised by Churchill, the idea for its use was allegedly proposed by Aleister Crowley (according to Aleister Crowley) and the sign has sundry occult resonances. If by the end of the week Baroness Trumpington hasn't at least been accused of being the current head of the Ordo Templi Orientis, I will be very disappointed.

^[1] While the “I do not recall” ploy is usually deemed sufficient in public life, it's worth bearing in mind an equally effective fallback position, the Matei defence: I was a bit confused. In fact I meant to say “I love you”.

I always have a good time imagining Matei as a Tory. "When I wrote that disability was theft and foreigners were terrorists and all single mothers irresponsible whores who should be left to fend for themselves and pelted with stones inscribed with words 'Irresponsible whores', that was merely a misspelling. What I actually meant to say was 'I value all human life in our diverse society and wish to treat you all with dignity and multicultural respect."
