It's long been a bugbear of the right - and I include a rabid uncle of mine in this - that the fire service, nationally, is "inefficient" and "overstaffed". I can only concur with the remark someone always makes whenever I mention this: I'd like to see how much they complained if it was their own house on fire. "No, there's too many of you, could some of you leave, please, I'm not wasting my taxes on the likes of you", etc.
