People forever complain about the combative nature of our parliamentary system, with two opposing parties squared up to one another and shouting across the chamber. Yet I can’t help noticing that all the examples I’ve ever seen of this sort of behaviour have occurred in legislatures where all the parties are ranged around in some kind of allegedly more mature and co-operative semicircle. I’m just saying.
