The Welsh reads: “I am not in the office at the moment. Please send any work to be translated.” [BBC]

My old alma mater, St Joseph's School, Sontley Rd, Wrexham, went one better with its signposts reading "Throw Your Stick Into A Trance."

Should I be able to work out what it was meant to say? Because I really can't.

Welsh translations ...

The Welsh bits from the St Joseph's sign read

"Ddisgybl a Baladr Daflu I berlewyg"

and

"Hymwelwyr Blesio Arfer Sontley Cerrynt Daflu I Berlewyg"

Which, in as much as it means anything at all, come out as:

"Bupil and wooden stave throw into a trance"

and

"Hvisitors to please accustom Sontley Stream throw into a trance"

respectively. :)

The correct Welsh phrases, respectively, should be:-

"Mynedfa ar gyfer Staff a Disgyblion"

("Mynedfa" = "entrance (door}", "ar gyfer" = "for (the purposes of)", "disgyblion" = "students")

and

"Ymwelwyr, defnydder y fynedfa Ffordd Sontley os gwelwch yn dda."

("Ymwelwyr" = "visitors," "defnydder" = "use (imperative)", "fynedfa" = "mynedfa with Welsh initial mutation," "ffordd" = "road," "os gwelwch yn dda" = "please.")

Hope these help. :)
