Given his obvious general intelligence, the one part of his story that I am prepared to believe is that he tried to cover her body afterwards with gravel and cement in order to “cover up traces of his DNA”.

I am so pleased. Something has to be pretty unspeakable before it shocks me, but this case really got under my skin.

There must be an entry in the big book of case law somewhere that if your defence is that you had sex with a corpse and then covered it with gravel, you might want to save everyone a bit of time and just plead guilty to murder. It's not like they're going to keep your job open for you on the outside, realistically.
