Jul. 8th, 2009 10:32 amI don’t usually do memes but this one is quick and isn’t personal, so here’s what happens if I whisk my iTunes into a froth.
This is precisely the reason why I don’t tend to shuffle my main playlist. Variety’s important but I find this kind of stop-start switchbacking less than engaging. If I’m in the mood for Thomas Köner’s epic and desolate landscapes, I’m unlikely to respond well to being immediately confronted with a silly song by Goldie Lookin’ Chain. Equally, I’d find Jarvis’s reading of “The Lion and Albert” directly after “Impact” an unwelcome change of pace, though I’m happy with Orbital being preceded by bebop. The cover of “Sweet Home Alabama” is a bit specialist, since it too is incredibly silly and appears to have been done by a group who hate “Sweet Home Alabama”, while the BBC sound effect is literally four minutes of a gentle breeze, which I wouldn’t deliberately add to any playlist.
