"Speak when illuminated," says the emergency-instructions sign on the door of the Heathrow Express. These are profound and wise words, especially coming from a train.

I am now drawing up a list of questions to ask the Heathrow Express on my return journey. Any suggestions?

"Passengers are warned only to use yellow medallion taxis. Other drivers may not be licensed."

Okay, I think, I know what it's like in London; shoddy saloons with no rear-view mirrors, "Cab mate? Cab?" and all that. It's sure to be much the same in New York.

I come out of the airport terminal, and parallel to the taxi lane is a passenger pick-up lane full of sleek black stretch limousines, their drivers all touting for business with the immortal words, "Limo, sir?"
