It’s been a while, but he’s still got it. I present Lord Selsdon’s contribution to yesterday’s seven-hour debate on the current economic situation )

Before Lord Selsdon made that speech, I realised with a heavy heart that I was not going to get to transcribe him; instead I got the peer who immediately preceded him. So I idly wrote a pretend note to Lord Selsdon before he even spoke, listing an array of unrelated topics that, for all we knew, he might cover. My colleague who followed me, and who had to transcribe his speech, added to the note with random topics that he actually did cover. My made-up list is in black; my colleague’s actual list is in blue.

You might have noticed that there are a couple of corrections in black, as well as a line struck through my facetious suggestions. This is because another colleague who followed both of us, in a rare moment of award-winning idiocy, decided that this must be a real note that we had forgotten to send, and sent it to Lord Selsdon. That’s his signature at the bottom there, after he’d corrected it and sent it back. Note that he has read the 15 items I listed, which no-one had mentioned, and simply crossed them out. God only knows what he thought.

I will not be writing any more fake notes.
