The engaged/vacant indicator on our office toilet door (which features the actual words “engaged” and “vacant”) was mysteriously broken the other day. The man who came this morning to replace it with a simple red/white sign told us that there’s a spate of these worded indicators being unscrewed and stolen.

Anyone know why that might be? Is it like the brief 80s craze for stealing and wearing VW badges? And is it just on the parliamentary estate, or has there been an outbreak of engaged-sign stealing at your workplace, college or other daytime location? Anyone?

Maybe prostitutes use them?

Those signs pretty much describe two of my four possible states. I haven't stolen any yet, but it's starting to look like a good idea.

(The other states being "asleep" and "absurd".)

I believe, m'lud, that it was Volkswagen badges. (Link from [livejournal.com profile] neil_scott's webzine, The Mind's Construction. Livejournal
will eat itself.)

Of course it was VW badges (entry duly edited). I meant VW; I even saw the badge in my mind as I typed those three (well, two) wrong letters. Cocks to it. *Thinks: how can I somehow make this all [livejournal.com profile] strictlytrue’s fault?* ... er, you Blairite lickspittle!

That's it - your name's going into the [livejournal.com profile] strictlytrue "Enemies of Tony" Database.

Perhaps it is the same VW people, there was a spate of nicking the little hammers that dangle under Smash This Glass alarm panels, maybe the vacant/engaged thefts are phase 3?

The craze seems to persist in rural Berkshire. A neighbour's Skoda badge has been swiped 5 times in the last 2 years (no, we don;t get that one either). My Mazda badge has been prized off twice in the same period (both times when the car is left on my drive overnight). The car opposite appears to have lost its numberplate between last night and this morning - the owner was swearing as I left for work this morning.

Are they collecting components for an underground international version of The Great Egg Race? In which case, what could they possibly be building?

I'm sorry. I just had to use this icon. I have absolutely nothing of value to add.
