JET ENGINES MAKE SPEAKING POINTLESS FOR A COUPLE OF SECONDS

“... it's beginning to get a bit busier now...”

PLANE THAT HAS JUST LANDED APPEARS IN VIEW IN THE BACKGROUND

“... as more and more planes are due to start landing here this evening.”

And that was the precise moment Huw Edwards realised he would live to regret hosting the news live from Heathrow Airport.

When I was 14 I wrote a sketch that involved the radio news being broadcast from increasingly unhelpful situations that meant you couldn't hear a word of what was said—the sports correspondent reporting on the snooker in front of an enormous ventilation unit at the Sheffield Crucible theatre, the political editor reporting from in front of a blast furnace, etc—which ended with some punchline about tomorrow's edition coming live from runway 3 at Heathrow Airport. Who'd have thought, etc.
