You know, there used to be a healthy degree of competition among spelling and grammar checkers in the 1980s, when they were aftermarket add-ons to your word processor.

Then Microsoft bought Grammatik, integrated their offering into Word, and killed the market for competitors.

Around 1990.

Which, by my estimate, is about when everything really began to go to hell in a handbasket with idiots like Francis Fukuyama announcing the triumph of New Capitalist Man and the end of history, Tony Blair beginning his relentless crawl to the top of the slug-pile, Coke introducing their new formula, and so on and so forth.
