Behind me two policemen are discussing a colleague who has lost a lot of weight. “You know Brian, he was a big bloke, burly,” says one. “He went down from 17 stone to 10. We all asked him how he’d done it, but he wouldn’t tell us. He was still having his big breakfasts and everything.”
The other one thinks for a moment. “Aids,” he says finally.
“Possibly,” agrees the first.
