If I recall correctly, it's the strained sound you make sucking your breath in between clenched teeth, a sort of tssk tssk tssk sound.

Guy swears by it working. He's not gone hungry since.

Addendum: Just talked with Mum about this. Turns out my old Grandad used to call the robins to his back garden by pishing for them.

Course, all the neighbours probably thought he'd got a poppy seed caught in his dentures or something ...
