The 12th Earl Ferrers

[3 December 1957]

Earl Ferrers: I have the idea of your Lordships' House becoming a repository for over-exuberant female politicians, and unfortunately we are unable to elevate them further, for that prerogative rests with the Almighty. Frankly, I find women in politics highly distasteful. In general, they are organising, they are pushing and they are commanding. Some of them do not even know where loyalty to their country lies... It is generally accepted, for better or worse, that a man's judgment is generally more logical and less tempestuous than that of a woman. Why then should we encourage women to eat their way, like acid into metal, into positions of trust and responsibility which previously men have held? If we allow women in this House, where will this emancipation end?... I feel sure that nine out of ten noble Lords have in their heart... that we like women; we admire them; sometimes we even grow fond of them; but we do not like them here.

I was coiling with raw horror until I spotted the date. At which point I relaxed and let out a happy little snigger.

Men hate women a lot more secretly now, so it's all OK. :)

Yes, maybe I should have made it clear that the noble Lord's stirring words made not a scrap of difference to the outcome.

I heard some sentiments like this on the radio this morning from the Chairman of the MCC. Lady cricketers are "lovely girls" but you don't want them mixing it with the chaps, otherwise they might do themselves a mischief. I know that Test Match Special is overly evocative of times gone by, but I'm not sure that this sort of thing should be encouraged.

Next week: The TMS team black up for a version of "Mammy".

I think the Lords would be a whole lot better with less Lords in it.

I'm imagining Derek's mate Clive pulling off over his picture.
