NZ names

Apparently in New Zealand it's compulsory to follow through on those daft ideas you find yourself bandying about in the pub.
A judge in New Zealand made a young girl a ward of court so that she could change the name she hated - Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii.

Judge Rob Murfitt said that the name embarrassed the nine-year-old and could expose her to teasing. He attacked a trend of giving children bizarre names, citing several examples.

New Zealand does not allow names that would cause offence or that are longer than 100 characters, Registrar-General Brian Clarke said. Officials often tried to talk parents out of particularly unusual choices that could embarrass their offspring.

Allowed: Violence; Number 16 Bus Shelter; Midnight Chardonnay; Benson and Hedges (twins)

Blocked: Yeah Detroit; Stallion; Twisty Poi; Keenan Got Lucy; Sex Fruit; Fat Boy; Cinderella Beauty Blossom; Fish and Chips (twins) [BBC]

Yeah Detroit is BRILLIANT!

I want to change my name to Outlaw.

You do find yourself wondering what "Yeah Detroit"'s future lovers are going to murmur at intimate moments, though, don't you?

Or maybe that's just me. "Oh YEAH ... Yeah."

Murfitt! I bet he does!

Also, lame. Why didn't she just go by Talula, or even just Lou? It's a perfectly common name. Nobody is expected to go by all their names all the time.

Violence; Number 16 Bus Shelter; Midnight Chardonnay; Benson and Hedges (twins)

It's a little story of conception, isn't it?

"Sex Fruit" is rather . . . exact, though, eh?

Brilliant. Its like naming a pedigree dog.

I like "Yeah Detroit", as well.

I am surprised by how uncreative they all are. You would've thought there'd at least be one called something like "Ha Ha Low Sperm Count" or something.

friends of mine did toy seriously with calling their first child after that thing you can buy from Boots, which tells you when in the month you're most/least prone to conceiving (spectacularly fallible in their case) - it's something like Predictor or Persona

Benson and Hedges (twins)

My mum has claimed on several occasions - not all of them down the pub - that if I had been twins, we would have been called Sam 'n Ella

Why are the 'alloweds' and 'blockeds' so random?
Call me Paula Yates, but what precisely is wrong with Cinderella Beauty Blossom when Number 16 Bus Shelter is acceptable?
I plan to name my first born Twisty Poi - I LOVE it!

Bloody Hell. Clearly these people think their children are pet goldfish or something. Do they need to be shot? I'm not sure. A sense of humour goes a long way. (Although those aren't particularly funny, especially not for the child in question!)

This does remind me, though, of a family my uncle knew by the name of Duckson. They named their son Donald. : (
