Crane protest

Right now Greenpeace protestors are dangling outside the House of Commons. This morning they scaled a crane on a barge beneath Westminster Bridge and unfurled their banner, which says:

While I support wholeheartedly their right to protest—even, if you can imagine such a thing, without a permit—I have to object to the banality of their slogan. “You love it. You want to marry it.” It’s not much of a clash of ideas, is it?

There are four protestors, all with hard hats and harnesses, taking it in turns to stretch out on a kind of hammock suspended to the side of the crane, while two policemen stand guard on the barge below them. No-one, in defiance of the current climate, is trying to storm the crane on the grounds of national security and detain the protestors as “terrorists”. It’s all very civilised, which is something to celebrate. The banner’s still crap, though.

I can't help feeling it's a bit lame, as protests go. Have any of them broken their necks yet?

“You love it. You want to marry it.”

I actually like the adolescent silliness of it. They should have produced another one reading "OMG TONY IZ GAY"

'TONY BLIARZ STICKS NUCLEAR SUBS UP HIS...' Oh dear God, I can't take this 'imagining protester slogan' business anymore.

Well, quite.

No-one’s yet successfully strung a banner across the length of the building. This is a shame, as it’s long enough that you could really get stuck into an issue and still have room to spare. Something like, “The Israeli Experience Suggests That Proportional Representation Hands The Balance Of Power To Extremist Fringe Groups Meaning That While They Are Disproportionately Represented Moderate Groups Are Virtually Sidelined And No Consensus Can Possibly Be Reached (What We’re Saying Is That While PR Might Be Desirable Conceptually, In Practice It Can End Up Having Entirely The Opposite Effect To What Was Intended). Furthermore, (Continued On Next Banner)”.

*ahem*

As long as we're talking pointless, made up and utterly stupid slogans that make no sense, yeah, that'd work.

Because no one believes the Israeli electoral system is a good idea, especially not for the UK.

It'd be good to see something done well enough to get the whole Palace. Take a bit more effort than I'm inclined to involve myself in though. Then, getting out of bed has that problem at the moment...

There's far too much of this in political "debate". In fact, there's far too much of it in life generally. Down with adolescent silliness. I demand more grown-up rational consideration and conclusions drawn upon sober reflection.

That's not going to fit on my banner, I'm afraid.
