Pull-quote of the day

"Mars is going to crash into Scotland" says Ultravox's Midge Ure

Obviously that's not what he's talking about, but still, I look forward to a Wellesian War of the Worlds-type screaming exodus of Scottish people who've only had half an ear on the radio.

In context it is, if anything, even odder. What Midge seems to be saying is that even if Sir Bob had said "Mars is going to crash into Scotland", it would still have been a symbolic call to stand up and be counted.

Now we see where the Stop the War Coalition have been going wrong all this time. Expect Galloway to team up with Lembit Opik any day now to announce a similar Deep Impact scenario.

I learnt the other day that it was rumoured in the Estonian press in the early 1920s that Mars had exploded and the pieces were headed straight for Estonia.

And, apropos of what you said about Bulgarian folk and machine guns the other day, here's pianist Jean Wiener on early European jazz:

"People understood almost too well that jazz was improvisation - but they didn't understand how to do it. So you got jazz bands whose only purpose was to make as much noise as possible - bells, klaxons, drums, revolvers, etc."

Mars crashing into Scotland would be nothing like a million people going to Edinburgh. Or would it? Maybe Midge Ure has insider knowledge about the strength of the Mars invasion force.
